Mariana is a Portuguese illustrator that stands out for her tiny people with human feelings. She created this alter ego as Mariana Miserável – which means Miserable Mariana – to be able to relate to all the feelings that rush through our minds on a daily basis from anxiety to lonely hearts. She is able to create a reality with her illustrations of a universe filled with emotion. Her unique style catches your eye but the meaning it holds makes you want to look more.
So how did this all start?
When she was young, an introvert misread by her school she found her way to communicate with a piece of paper and pencils. She drew with no intention to look pretty but to communicate even if others didn’t understand. Her goal was always to draw her version of the world yet that was not appealing for her teachers. There was a creative restraint in learning how to be creative. She turned 18 and had to choose what she wanted in University. With the pressure of living in a country with few creative options for success she chose Design.

So how did she become an illustrator?
Life is made of time and decisions need a lot of it. She didn´t actually realize her true calling even though she tried to explore that subject and drawing during university. Mariana then interned in Barcelona yet design didn’t make her tick so she went back home filled with doubts. She followed her heart to Porto where she started with exhibitions and they actually gave her a name. They went from coffee shops, stores to bars but that didn’t give her the money to live. Therefore she decided to study a master in graphic design and editorial projects.
When did it become rentable?
She decided that if she wanted this then she had to work for it as hard as she could. There were less exhibitions and more orders. She used social media to stand out and to be known. Promoting herself to success. She no longer was an illustrator she was a brand. Creating her alter ego to bring context to her drawn reality. Her name was known even before her bank account knew that but then it clicked. She now not only is an illustrator but that is her job.

Her advice for artist that aren´t sure this is a profession
“Never think you can´t do it”
