The meaning of a promise ring changes between countries or couples but the core is always the same, a promise of true love. When one gives that ring, with it is the promise that they found the person they want to spend the rest of their life with. This is a serious feeling, an internal commitment to someone. To be sure that you have found your soul mate is scary but to promise that is beautifully brave. That is why these symbols should not be given lightly. With that round infinite comes the weight of love. Varying between shapes and colours some even have the word ‘forever’ written on the inside of the ring they all symbolize a feeling. Part of the tradition is that the woman should use that ring every day, proudly showing her commitment. Promise rings have been in the world for decades, the ritual that years before one is engaged they were promised. Nevertheless, my generation and the next have ruined this.

Men give a promise ring with no promise

Things might be changing but men have been raised to believe that to show emotion is weak. Before us, real men wrote heartfelt letters to the women they love and showed their heart with confidence. Although they then raised men to believe that real men are emotionally shut. Therefore, rings, marriages, romance and love itself is dying. Great symbols and promises are given with no heart. When a boy or man nowadays gives a promise ring he is just giving something he knows the girlfriend wants. There is no feeling. They are not sure that she is the one, they just want her to smile. The ring ends up being the quick solution for the right now girl. Just to be clear this truth may be the majority but not the rule. There are some hopeless romantics out there.

Women need a ring for the show

As humans, we have this need for validation. As if we fight for approval of people we don´t even care about. Growing up with romantic comedies, hopeless princesses and intense mothers we end up believing we need that ring. Losing the whole meaning of it. We want to show that we have true love. We want other people to see that we will be ok forever. An unrealistic expectation for everyone. Fighting for this ring, needing it to be in their finger, women end up accepting it from a man that isn´t their soul mate.
