Newspapers are perceived as serious information but also are normally 90% focused on the tragedy that surrounds us. We become programed to read about darkness and forget all about the good around us. Emily created a newspaper focusing only on celebrating the positivity of our planet from inspiring people to positive changes in the world.

How did a 24 year old create a successful business with just a yellow idea?

After going through a tough phase Emily decided she wanted to cheer people up so they didn’t have to feel brought down by the media. Having the idea of a newspaper filled with positivity and yellow energy she planned the happy newspaper. The final touch would be funding her project therefore she reached out with a kickstarter campaign to be able to launch this dream. 73 people invested and in the second day of the campaign she already gained £500. In December of 2015 her first issue was launched and now she already has 11 issues spread around the world. What started in her mind and what she calls the tinniest office in the world has now a small team to help her create this vision. Although she does have help she still directs, designs, illustrates and mails all these pages filled with joy.

Wait for it because the surprise is not even the newspaper

This colorful human being has the brainpower to not only create this revolutionary newspaper but also hand design it´s own merchandising and write her own book. Her brand is in most card shops in the UK and her book is smiling at you in the shelves of your favorite book stores. Her work started with selling cards as a young girl, to happy notes, mugs and cheerful illustrations to finally a newspaper for people to smile more. After doing all this she still has time to hide sweet notes in some of her books for sale and devour cookie dough while dancing to 80s songs, aren´t you impressed yet?

This was the outtake to a video I did when asked to tell 'the story behind the happy news'. I think it's important we talk about our struggles as well as our achievements & as I've a lot more followers than when I first posted this I want you to see what a vulnerable place The Happy News and my happy brand came from. It's not all sunshine and rainbows although some people think it is in my world… I and many other people on instagram aren't going to constantly share the good and bad in equal amounts but that doesn't mean that everything we post online is a true reflection of our lives and what we're going through. When I first started my happy products in 2014, I was sobbing whilst packing happy boxes in my bedroom some days… I started it all because I knew what I was going through wasn't a patch on what a lot of people would be going through at that moment. My brand isn't me living in a glitter bubble where there's no sadness or struggle.. it's the total opposite, it's recognising how much crap we all have to deal with in our daily lives never mind comparing those lives to what we see on instagram every day. I've recently had a few people say they've had to unfollow me as my constant work ethic was making them feel like they weren't doing enough & I was actually shocked because I try to focus on my life and the people around me in real life… we all reach different stages at different points, we all have different things that make us happy, we all have different focuses/goals… and that's ok! I share the BTS of what I do on my story because what you see in these edited squares isn't a true reflection of what goes into what I do. Working on your own everyday can sometimes be lonely so I share snapshots on my story most days. Some days I'm too busy to even look at my phone. Some days I'm visiting my Nan in a care home and listening to her wonderful tales. Some days I lose my shit and end up crying because things aren't the way they used to be… only a tiny % of what you see on certain social media accounts is reality so if you do one thing please try to stop comparing your everyday to somebody else's absolute best. It's not real! ?

How can just one person do so much?

If you have the opportunity to see her instagram you can answer this question. Emily is more than just a person, she is a force of nature. Holding so much light inside her she dresses with all the colors that fill her mind. With a smile from cheek to cheek you can see her work as hard as possible everyday to help others. This is not just a business for her but a way to let more positivity into the world. She is creating a movement that everyone needed. She teaches us that a small girl drawing cards for her family, eventually selling them to friends as a hobby and going to design fairs can later on become an example to creatives doubting their power. As a wise man once told me, “if you truly want something, you can have it but you need to give it everything you got”.
