I call the transition into independence a scream because when we are about to scream we inhale all the air with determination, our lungs get full and we focus all our energy on screaming with our maximum volume. More than just sound we are giving a little bit of ourselves with all our power. We need to scream for independence so we can let go of what is holding us back. The time comes and we must become our own person.
What is the truth behind independence?
Firstly the person strips of all the rules they had to obey without being able to question them. Every rule is washed from their body. With this wash comes a relief because so many automatic reactions due to respect disappear. They become naked. Ready for a new start. Tearing off all that weight so they can free their voice. The voice was trapped by orders. You don´t actually have one when you can´t decide so many things in your life.
How can one start this new life?
You create your own skin, developing slowly from every new change. Every new decision you make transforms into the new coat you will wear everyday. You will have scars because not always you will make the right decision. Although this new skin will be pure, it will represent only you because you are it´s creator. You become the person that follows their own rules. An independent human being that pursues their heart and mind instead of taking orders without questioning them. Creating your own rulebook filled with mistakes, triumphs, changes will be made constantly but all written by you.
Are you ready for a lonely road?
Your voice commands you because you only obey yourself. This sounds obvious but to gain a voice is scary. You decide everything. You don´t have people that input in what you do with your life, you might hear their opinions but you don´t have to follow them. You have yourself. Starting to say no, going with your own gut, choosing to follow your own ethics and going with your emotions.
As your skin grows, you become delicate, vulnerable, fragile not expecting or knowing how to react to the challenges that await you. After you confront them your new skin will gain strength. You need to free yourself from that old skin like a snake. Forget all the rules that were implied especially the unspoken one´s, becoming able to fight for your own. Gain your voice. You no longer need to talk what is correct. Your mouth is no longer a parrot to another person´s mind. Speak with no fear because only you own your mouth. When independent you don´t ask other people for favors, you find a way to build what you want. Independence is the most empowering and freeing thing a human can achieve.
